French Drains

A properly installed French drain will aid in solving drainage problems. The French drain is a perforated pipe that should be installed with a fabric sock over the pipe to prevent sediment from entering the pipe. The pipe should be installed so that gravity aids with the flow of water. Excavation of a trench will be necessary. The depth of the trench should be about two feet deep and can be deeper if needed. The base of the trench will be filled with gravel and the pipe will sit on top of the gravel. More gravel will be placed on top of the trench once the pipe has been installed. Once the gravel is covering the pipe the trench will be filled with soil. There will need to be some repair to the area of the lawn where the French drain has been installed. It will need to be raked and over seeded as needed.

Footing Drains

A footing drain is basically a French drain system. They are typically installed along the foundation of a home and can be installed along the foundation walls on the interior, exterior, or both. Interior footing drains will most likely be more cumbersome to install than and exterior footing drains as interior installations will require the floor of the basement to be cut out in order to install the French drain system. However, in certain situations, this will be well worth the effort in solving a problematic wet basement.

Gutters

If your having drainage problems one of the most obvious problems can occur with improperly installed gutters and downs. Downspouts should be connected to underground drainpipes that will move the volumes of storm water to appropriate locations so that the water is not dumped right at the base of your foundation. Handling the water from your downspouts is one of many improvements that will help solve wet yards and basements.
